Year 3/4 Weekly Update

Tuesday, January 27, 2009

Monday 2nd February

Welcome to this week's blog. Amazing that we are already in February! We had the pleasure of seeing Mrs Narraway last week with all her family and she is looking wonderful as normal!!

Please remember that next Monday we should start swimming. The children need to have their uniform named as it is much easier when they are getting dressed again!!! Mostly the children do not make it back in time to buy toast so on a Monday it would be better if you could send them with a snack instead. After swimming the children are always really hungry.

We will be sending out the parent interview times this week. please be aware that we do try to accommodate but sometimes it is necessary to change them.

HOMEWORK

This week the children will get their spelling sheet to learn for a test on Friday.

They do not have to do sentences.

They will get their numeracy from their Math's teacher on a Monday. Please make sure that they have it back in on the Friday as all the children and teachers mark the maths then.

WEEK THREE ISLANDS HOMEWORK.

You need a shelter!

This week the children need to write a set of instructions for another person who could be in the same position as themselves on an island. The children can write and draw a set of ideas/instructions about how they could build a shelter on the islands.

Remember to think about what materials and things would be available.

Think about protection from animals and harsh weather conditions too.

Don't forget to use pictures and labelled diagrams. Please make sure that it is done on paper so we can put all the work together at the end to make a book.

We have a very exciting week ahead in school. We have

Book Week!

The book fair is open after school every night. Please remember we earn commission from every book sold and all the money is used to buy materials and reading resources for our classes.

Our curriculum will centre around books and we will be doing lots of different things relating to books. On Friday the children will be allowed to dress up as a character from a book.

LITERACY

Our Literacy this week is linked with our BOOK WEEK and is all about READING. Through the course of the week the children will be finding out about the History of Books, How Books are Made, The Parts of a Book, including becoming an illustrator (choosing their favourite style), and the Different Genres of Books. There will be lots of opportunities for the children to talk about what they like to read and why. We will also be asking the children to bring in their favourite thing to read to share with the class - it might be a book, a comic, a letter. As well as checking out the sites below have a go at googling your favourite author!

NUMERACY

The children are all working really hard learning their number facts and times tables and it's lovely to see their hard work paying off. Remember the more you can learn this year the easier lots of Maths becomes!

http://tutpup.com/

http://www.mathszone.co.uk/ - explore the multiply and divide section. Can you find any good games to recommend?

In Numeracy this week Mrs Harding's group will be refining their expertise with grid multiplication, adding decimals and the 24 hour clock. By the end of the week the children:

COULD be able to use grid multiplication and use 3 and 4 digit numbers.
SHOULD be able to add and subtract decimals.
SHOULD be able to use the 24 hour clock.

MUST be able to find a co ordinate in the first quadrant.

Miss Robinson was delighted with her group last week - we now have a class full of experts at COLUMN ADDITION - the children were working with 3 digit and 4 digit numbers, and could confidently carry numbers across the columns and explain why!!! Well done - I'm very proud. As well as that we even managed to sneak in learning how to make a number 10 x bigger or 10 x smaller by investigating how to multiply and divide by 10. This week we will be transferring what we have already learnt to help us with COLUMN SUBTRACTION. Keep using the websites from last week as well as the ones below:

http://www.wmnet.org.uk/wmnet/custom/files_uploaded/uploaded_resources/851/DecompExpandv2.swf - this breaks column subtraction down so that you can see what happens with the 'stealing' method.

http://www.amblesideprimary.com/ambleweb/mentalmaths/gameshoweasy.html - keep your mental skills for addition adn subtraction.

http://www.amblesideprimary.com/ambleweb/mentalmaths/gameshow.html - a harder version of the game above.

By the end of the week the children:

MUST be able to subtract a 1 or 2 digit number from a 2 digit number.

SHOULD be able to subtract using the 'stealing' technique. Yes, you read it right, the children are now taught to steal from the top number rather than borrow and pay back!

COULD be able to apply the strategies they've learnt to work with any numbers.

In Mrs Bethell’s group we are still focusing on fractions in our main lessons – finding fractions of shapes, finding fractions of numbers, using our times tables. Yr4 will move onto mixed numbers and improper fractions. We will also be continuing to learn our times tables and doubling and halving numbers.
Please continue to help your child learn their times tables- these are vital for the quick solving of many problems in maths.

I must be able to find a fraction of a shape
I should be able to use my x tables to find a fraction of a number
I could change an improper fraction to a mixed number – Yr 4 only

TOPIC - India

We will be linking to our theme of India to books in the afternoons this week. We will be reading an Indian myth and our curriculum work will be directly related to this. We will be reading the myth.

Kanai’s betel nut

The children will be drawing the world/heaven, writing descriptions of the characters and the settings too. Finally the children will be able to write a myth themselves in the same style.

AND FINALLY...

On Friday, the Friends of St Vincent's will be holding a cake sale in the hall at 3pm. Why not come along and browse the book fair at the same time? We will need cakes to be donated for this to be a success, so if you do send some in, in a container, please ensure it is named, so they can be returned to you.

That is all about now, have a good week,

The Three and Four Team

Monday 26th January

Welcome to this week's blog. The children had a fantastic time last week starting their islands homework. We had a show and tell session on Friday in all the classes and lots of certificates were given out for the their excellent islands. Mr Barker handed out some head teacher's stickers too. Well done to every one!

HOMEWORK WEEK TWO

Spellings are sent out as normal to learn for a test on Friday but the children do not need to do sentences.

Maths homework is given out by their Numeracy teacher and will be marked on a Friday.

How did you get to your island?

Write about your arrival at the island. Explain who you are with and how you got there. Try to think of an unusual and interesting way to arrive. The children need to put it on A4 paper and can write and draw. We are keeping this work on paper in a file so that at the end we can put it all together and make a front cover. Please do not put it into their homework book.

PARENT'S MEETINGS

Last week we sent out letters about parent's evening in February. We will try our hardest to give you the times requested but obviously sometimes we may have to change them slightly to suit the demand. Please send in any outstanding letters and also the swimming medical forms. Thank you.

Friends of St Vincent’s

The friends held a meeting in school last Friday at 3pm, in response to a dwindling turnout at their evening meetings. There were a few new faces, but they would love to have many more! They have helped to provide many of the new equipment and resources that we have in school, and the greater their numbers, the easier the workload! They have offered to make some drawstring bags for us, in order to store some of the new playground equipment. To help with this, they have asked that if anyone has any material which they wish to donate, then please send it into school. Maybe you have some old duvet covers that you no longer need, or some material that you promised you make something from! Many thanks in anticipation of your generosity.

LITERACY

We move onto read Chapter 4 of Grandpa Chatterji this week. The children are really enjoying this book and this week we find out what happens when Grandpa Leicester comes to visit. We are continuing our work on SPEECH and how to write conversations using correct layout and punctuation.

http://www.lancsngfl.ac.uk/curriculum/literacy/lit_site/lit_sites/speech_marks/index.htm

As well as that we are also exploring SYNONYMS for SAID

http://www.ngfl-cymru.org.uk/vtc/ngfl/english/bgfl/dont_use_said/

Monday is, as usual, our Spell Well and Comprehension day.

http://woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk/revision/engindex.html - have a go at some of the comprehensions on this page

NUMERACY

The children continue to work hard on learning their times tables and number bond facts. Keep plugging away at them:

http://tutpup.com/

http://www.wmnet.org.uk/resources/gordon/Hit%20the%20button%20v9.swf

In Mrs Harding's group we had to spend longer than I thought on adding decimals so need to start the multiplication this week. We also will be reviewing co ordinates and kilometres/metres too.

COULD use 3, 4 and 5 digit no.s to x
SHOULD be able to x 2 and 3 digit no.s.

In Mrs Bethell's group this week we are continuing to learn our times tables and are also moving onto learning about fractions. Initially we will be finding fractions of shapes, then we will move onto fractions of numbers. In order to be able to calculate fractions of numbers, children must know their times tables.

Children must know their 2,3,4,5,10 times tables
Children could work out fractions of pictures- write the fraction shaded in, write the fraction un-shaded
Children should be able to use their tables to find fractions of numbers

Monday 19th January

Welcome to the third week back!! We cannot believe how fast the weeks are flying by.

Can we ask you to hear your child read as there are still a few children with no comments in their diaries at all.

HOMEWORK

Homework for the next seven weeks is a little bit different. Last Monday the children had a great day doing their Mantle of the Expert day on Land Tax.
Therefore, we are going to follow it up with a homework about an ISLAND.

There will be different activities to do over the weeks. Your child will bring a sheet home with them all on. Please keep this sheet safe as it needs to last lots of weeks!

The first week the children have to design an island. They have to make a map and make it as colourful as possible. They have to decide on what they want to include such as forests, rivers, paths, roads, mountains etc. The island can be real or imaginary. Remember the children can use a key and they do not need people or animals on the map just permanent features
.

LITERACY

We continue to explore the fantastic story of Grandpa Chatterji and how his relationship with his family grows and develops as he spends time with them. The children are really enjoying this story and finding out more about the characters and situations. Our discussions have been very interesting with the children surprising us with what they have picked up from the text.

This week we are concentrating on how to write conversations. It is important that the children know how and where to put speech marks to show a character is speaking and that we start a new line for a new speaker. This could really help their writing in general, perhaps you could help by talking to your child about how speech looks in their reading books too.

http://www.mystery-productions.info/hyper/Hypermedia_2001/Edd_Hartley/Artefact/index.htm - follow the link and you'll be an expert in using speech marks in no time!

http://www.ngfl-cymru.org.uk/vtc/ngfl/english/bgfl/dont_use_said/

For our Word Level work this week we are investigating silent letters. Check out the links below to see how much you know:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/skillswise/words/spelling/soundandspell/silentletters/index.shtml

http://www.saintambrosebarlow.wigan.sch.uk/Fun_and_games/silentletters.htm

Keep general Literacy skills ticking over too by looking back at:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/starship/english/index.shtml

NUMERACY

You all know what I'm going to say - TABLES TABLES TABLES!!!

http://tutpup.com/

http://www.sgfl.org.uk/games/games/maths/multiplicationstation

http://www.mathplayground.com/balloon_invaders.html- a different game that checks your multiplying and dividing!

http://www.channel4learning.net/sites/puzzlemaths/md_machine_game.shtml

In Numeracy this week Mrs Harding’s group will be finishing off a few things with decimals and will be moving onto multiplication methods.
By the end of the week the children:
COULD use 3, 4 and 5 digit no.s to x
SHOULD
be able to x 2 and 3 digit no.s.
SHOULD
be able to x decimals by 10, 100 and 1000.
MUST know common fraction and decimal equivalents off by heart.

Example:

0.2=1/5

0.25=1/4

0.5=1/2

0.125=1/8

0.1=1/10

0.01=1/100

0.33=1/3

0.75=3/4

Miss Robinson's Numeracy Group this week are exploring measuring length. The children will be learning about mm, cm, m and km. They will be able to draw and measure objects, as well as give estimates and accurate readings of length. The websites listed below will be great to have a go at:

http://www.funbrain.com/measure/

http://www.bgfl.org/bgfl/custom/resources_ftp/client_ftp/ks2/maths/measures/index.htm - follow the READING LENGTH link

http://www.channel4learning.net/sites/puzzlemaths/pinpoint_game.shtml

http://www.echalk.co.uk/Maths/PrimaryNationalStrategy_Yr6/DfES-MathsActivitiesforyear6/throwing.html - want a real challenge? This activity even goes into decimals too!

By the end of the week the children:

MUST know the basic units of measuring length and how to read them.

SHOULD be able to estimate length and check they have measured objects accurately.

COULD be able to use decimals to show units of measurement, e.g 1m 64cm = 1.64m

As well as that can you keep your addition and subtraction skills going on:

http://www.mathszone.co.uk/ - number facts +/-

Mrs Bethell's Group are concentrating on multiplication as repeated addition and division as sharing out or grouping. At the end of the week we will be having a times tables test to see how many children achieve their Bronze and Silver awards.

Yr 3 Bronze = 10x, 5x, 3x, 2x tables

Silver = 10x, 5x, 3x, 4x, 2x tables

Yr 4 = all tables aiming to achieve 90% or more in 10 minutes or less.

We will also be focusing on doubling and halving.

Please help your child to know the doubles of all numbers to 15 off by heart.
10 doubles to 20
11 doubles to 22
13 doubles to 26
14 doubles to 28
15 doubles to 30
I must know that multiplication is repeated addition
I should know the 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 x tables
I could know that division is the opposite of multiplication

SCIENCE
The children and staff had a great start to the topic on moving and growing. At first we got the children to sketch what they thought a human skeleton was like then they constructed them using lots of bones. Mrs Harding’s needed a bit of changing as some of them resembled spiders and ET. Things have now got a bit better and we have excellent examples of human skeletons in every room in three and four! Great fun and amusement was had by all!!!

This week we are learning the names of the bones and will be looking at different skeletons belonging to living things. We will be asking questions and comparing different skeletons.

By the end of the week:

Children could know the names of the bones of the body.
Children could be able to compare and contrast similarities and differences of different skeletons.

Children should be able to ask questions about different skeletons.

Children must know the names of the bones of the skeleton.

Monday 12th January

Wow! What a busy first week we had back. The children really enjoyed their trip to the theatre to see Robin hood. The behaviour of the school was fantastic and we were complimented by the staff. Thank you to the people who came with us.

SWIMMING

We have been informed this week that swimming won't start till later in February You should have received a letter last week with all the new dates.

HOMEWORK

Homework will begin this week. The children need to put every spelling in a sentence unless told otherwise by the teacher. From time to time in the future we may vary this homework with other speaking tasks and extended activities that last a few weeks. Numeracy homework will be given out by the numeracy teacher.

This week Monday will be a little different as we are not having a normal day but:

A MANTLE OF THE EXPERT DAY

The title of the day is land tax. The children will be making an island, making a map, meeting the owner of the island, facing a problem over crop production and harvest in the village. They have to come up with solutions and debate different opinions.

There will be:

drama
discussions
debates
mime
map making
Listen out for the children telling you all about their exciting day!

LITERACY

In Literacy this week we are continuing to read Grandpa Chatterji. We looked in detail at the character of Grandpa Chatterji last week and the children did very well backing up their character ideas with evidence from the text. This week the children will now be starting to make links from the story with their own lives, as well as finding and collecting information about India. There will be lots of opportunities for discussion and 'getting into role' - we will be hot-seating the different characters from the story to see if we can understand them better.

As well as this keep building up your Spelling Bank. The site below is brilliant for learning your Weekly Spellings. Simply type in your word list and off you go:

http://www.crickweb.co.uk/assets/resources/flash.php?&file=looksay2

Also try -

http://www.harcourtschool.com/menus/auto/18/49.html - how far can you go?

http://www.fekids.com/kln/games/whomp/whomp.html - become the King of Monsters in this boggle style game - how many words can you find?

http://tutpup.com/ - don't forget that tutpup has a spelling section!

NUMERACY

Our Tables Award will be starting up again this week and I know from checking my group last week that unless you keep practising your times tables they do disappear. Here are our old favourites to get you back into the swing:

http://tutpup.com/

http://www.wmnet.org.uk/wmnet/custom/files_uploaded/uploaded_resources/851/Hitthebuttonv7.swf

http://www.oswego.org/ocsd-web/games/Ghostblasters1/gbcd.html - can you hit the right ghosts? Remember a multiple is just the times table you want to practice.

And something new to challenge you:

http://www.learnyourtables.co.uk/

Mrs Harding's group will be carrying on with decimals this week. We will be writing decimals as fractions and vice versa, we will be adding and subtracting decimals too. By the end of the week the children:

COULD be able to change decimals into fractions and be able to add and subtract decimals.
SHOULD be able to write a decimal as a fraction and write a fraction as a decimal.
SHOULD be able to order a set of decimals.
MUST be able to recognise place value and tell you what the tenths, hundredths and thousandths are in a decimal number.

To find out more please see:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/skillswise/numbers/fractiondecimalpercentage/decimals/introductiontodecimals/

http://www.coolmath.com/decimals/index.html

http://www.mathsisfun.com/decimals-menu.html

Miss Robinson's group got off to a flying start with their FRACTION work last week. It was great to see everyone on GREEN with their understanding. This week we are moving onto the 'trickier' side of fractions - calculating amounts of numbers. It would be a great help if you practise halving numbers at home too. We will also be making sure we can recognise whether a fraction is greater or less than a whole, and greater or less than a half. This is getting ready to work with improper fractions later on in the year.

By the end of the week the children

MUST be able to find half of a whole number.

MUST be able to recognise a fraction as bigger or less than 1 (whole).

SHOULD be able to calculate one third, one quarter, one fifth, one sixth, etc of a number.

SHOULD be able to recognise a fraction as bigger or less than a half.

COULD be able to find any fraction amount of a number, e.g. 3/5 of 25, 2/3 of 9 etc.

Check out the links below:

http://www.sums.co.uk/playground/n6a/playground.htm - hang the monkeys!

http://pbskids.org/cyberchase/games/fractions/ - and just for fun.

Mrs Bethell's Numeracy Group will be focusing on rapid recall of addition and subtraction of numbers under 20 - against the clock, to start off every lesson. The main focus of the week is measurment - length using mm, cm, m and km, and weight using g ang kg. You could help your child by encouraging them to use rulers, tape measures and scales around the house and estimating/guessing lenths and weights of objects around the home - then actually measuring those objects.

I must be able to use a ruler acurately to measure the length of an object in mm and cm.
I could read from a simple scale to find the weight of an object.
I could solve simple measurement word problems.

SCIENCE

We have started a new topic on moving and growing. The children have had great fun trying to draw skeletons without any teaching! This week we will teach them more about the skeleton and they will have to construct a skeleton and put the bones together. To find out more about bones and the skeleton see:

By the end of the week:

Children could know the names of the bones of the body.
Children could be able to construct a skeleton.
Children should be able to put the major bones in the correct place.
Children must know that a skeleton is used for movement and support.
