Monday 2nd March

Welcome to this week's blog spot.

Please remember that there is a Kingswood meeting at 3.30pm on Tuesday this week in the Hall.

HOMEWORK

Homework will start again this week.
Numeracy homework set by the Numeracy teacher.
Spellings will be given out and tested on Friday.

Island homework - week 5

You have made some friends on the island and decide to have a Party.
Design some invitations explaining the reasons for your party and giving details about what will happen. Write a letter to the local musicians to persuade them to provide the music.

WORLD MATH'S DAY

We are very excited and we are having a Numeracy morning on Wednesday across all ages of the school. We will be doing lots of activities throughout the morning. We have also joined a World Math's day competition and your child will be bringing home their own password and user name this week. This will allow them to compete with other children from across the world. They can even win prizes and can start practising for the big day straight away. Well done to the children in Mrs Harding's group that have played lots of games so far. Try and add to your totals. But don't forget to use tutpup too please.

LITERACY

The children made a great start to their topic of INSTRUCTIONS last week and so this week we will be building on our knowledge of how to write instructions for a given purpose. We will be spending time investigating and collecting IMPERATIVE VERBS to use when we write our own instructions. We will also be making sure we know the key features of instructions and can check for them in our own writing.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/ks2bitesize/english/activities/instructions.shtml

Alongside this we will be continuing our Spell Well activities as well as checking our Spelling homework. The sites below will be useful for keeping your spelling skills ticking over:

http://tutpup.com/ - don't forget you can even test your spellings on this fantastic site!

http://www.eastoftheweb.com/games/Eight1.html - a super game (just like the word game that my class play most weeks). Howmany words can you make?

http://www.readwritethink.org/materials/construct/index.html - How many words can you pop into the Word Bank?

NUMERACY

We are all doing very well with learning our number facts, times tables facts and division facts. With it being World Math's Day this week let's give ourselves an extra push!

In Mrs Harding's group this week we will be moving onto a new topic of looking at angles. We will be looking at angles in a right angle, in a straight line and round a point. We will be learning about calculating turns too. We will be finding out about protractors and how they measure angles too.

By the end of the week the children.

COULD be able to use a protractor to measure angles.

SHOULD be able to calculate angles in a straight line and round a point.

MUST know the names of the different types of angles - obtuse, acute and reflex.

To find out more please see:

Miss Robinson's group had a very busy week last week - the children all worked hard to learn how to find the important information in a word problem and then solve it. This week we will be moving on to review 2D shape and exploring AREA and PERIMETER. Remember Area is calculating the space inside a shape and perimeter is the outside of a shape.

By the end of the week the children:

MUST be able to find the perimeter and the area of a shape using squares and know how to record it accurately.

SHOULD be able to explain the difference between area and perimeter.

COULD be able to answer questions about area and perimeter.

And don't forget on Wednesday it's World Maths Day and so we have a whole morning to develop and practise our Maths skills - don't worry it's going to be a fun packed time!!!

In Mrs Bethell's Numeracy Group this week we will be working on rounding numbers to the nearest 10 and 100 and also on vertical addition. On Wednesday - World Maths Day, we will be completing a range of mathematical games and puzzles involving : time, capacity, money and compass points.

Please remember to continue learning your times tables and time facts also.

I must be able to round a number to the nearest 10 and add 2 numbers vertically.

I should be able to round a number to the nearest 10 or 100.

I could add 3 numbers vertically.

SCIENCE

This week we will be learning about how different animals and insects are supported. The children will be given lots of different pictures and asked to sort them into different categories of arachnids, insects and molluscs.

Children could know all about exoskeletons and be able to present this information.
Children should know that insects/animals belong to different groups.
Children should be able to place different animals and insects into groups.

Children must know what a mollusc/arachnid/insect are.

Monday 23rd February

Welcome to the start of our second Spring term. The morning and nights are getting lighter so Spring is around the corner we hope. Thank you for the lovely comments that were made at the last blog spot.

Swimming as far as we know is on on Monday so please send the children in prepared with snacks and their kit. The first swimming session went smoothly and the children were all assessed in their swimming capabilities and placed into groups.

There will be no homework this week to ease us all back in to the first week of a long term. Homework will continue next week with the island's homework and spelling sheets and Numeracy. We just ask that you hear your child read as often as you can. We have found that the children who have not made progress in recent tests are sometimes those who are not reading at home as much as they should do. Don't forget to make comments as we all love to read the messages.

Ash Wednesday
This week sees the start of Lent. We will be holding a short service in the hall to mark Ash Wednesday and the children will receive their ashes in the classrooms afterwards. Should you wish to receive ashes in school, please join us at 9am in the hall.
To read about the traditions and customs of Ash Wednesday, go to

LITERACY

This week we are going to be moving on to INSTRUCTIONS. We give instructions all the time to people but it is important that we know how to write them. Think about all the different times you follow instructions. We will be learning all about imperative verbs, specialist language, and how to use time or sequence phrases. Have a go at the games below to get the hang of it:

http://www.crickweb.co.uk/assets/resources/flash.php?&file=teaseq

http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/ks2bitesize/english/activities/instructions.shtml - put all your new found skills into practice

http://www.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk/studentssite/playgroundgames.htm - have a look at all the instructions here for different playground games. Would you be able to write instructions for your favourite game?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/skillswise/words/grammar/texttypes/instructions/ - try the game

http://www.ngfl-cymru.org.uk/vtc/Phase2delivery/Wales/Literacy/Keystage2/Writing/Instructions/Introduction/default.htm- work through the lesson

By the end of the week the children:

MUST know how to sequence a set of instructions.

SHOULD be able to use an imperative verb and a time phrase in their set of instructions.

COULD be able to write a set of instructions using bossy verbs.connectives, adverbs and adjectives.

NUMERACY

Tables...tables...tables! It's amazing how quickly we can lose our rapid recall of times tables if we neglect them, even for a couple of weeks. Use the links below to get them up to tip top condition.

Monday 9th February

Welcome to this week's blog. The weather was great last week for the children and they were allowed out during the snow as it is a rare experience. When we have adverse weather the children must wear coats and it is also a good idea for them to have gloves, hats and scarves too so they can go out. Children even came in in boots, wellies etc which was great for playing in the snow.

First of all we would like to thank everyone for supporting our book fair last week, it was a great success. You all looked fantastic on Friday dressing up, well done.We would also like to thank Miss Knight for organising the week.

This week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday we will be holding our parent consultations. You will have received your time slot by now. The appointment times are 10 minutes long and we do try to stick to these times. If you feel you need longer then pleased arrange another convenient time with your child's teacher.

There will be a Mass held in the school hall at 9.15am on Friday, on the theme of Communion. This is to tie in with our current Here I Am theme and will be led by staff and children from Key Stage 2. All primary schools in the Parish are following the program and each term, a Mass will be held on school, on the theme of the Here I Am topic. You are warmly invited to attend, but please remember that space is at a premium in the school hall.

SWIMMING

We start swimming this Monday. We will need some parental help at 9.15am and 9.45 too. Please remember that year three go first and Year four go second. The children will need to bring a snack because we get back too late for toast. The children are always starving after lots of exercise!! Please remember that the children will need a proper coat as we walk up to the bus often in bad weather.

Please make sure that all uniform is named as there are a lot of clothes all in one place all looking the same!!!!

WEEK FOUR ISLANDS HOMEWORK.

Strange noises in the night.........

You hear strange noises and sounds in the night

You go to investigate some strange noises and end up talking yourself out of a lot of trouble. Write out your conversation. Don't forget to use speech marks and also put each new speaker on a new line. Please put on paper to go in their files.

Parents please be aware that we have only just taught speech marks.

LITERACY

What a lovely week we had last week with all our book themed activities. The children had lots of fun and really enjoyed reading and sharing books with each other as well as finding out all about books. Unfortunately because the week was so busy and we all got so carried away with our BOOKS we didn't get the opportunity to finish our work on KENAI'S BETEL NUT so that will form the basis of this week's Literacy lessons. By the end of the week we hope to have written and published our very own version of this Indian tale.
