Monday 30th March

Welcome to this week's blog spot.

Please don't forget the Easter garden competition which is fast approaching in the last week before we finish. There will be prizes in every class.

Thank you to all the people who have sent in gold for the GO FOR GOLD. The date has now been extended and is now 7th April. The total amount raised will be published as soon as we know. Thank you for all the gold as all the proceeds will go towards improving the playground.

STARS AND STRIPES DAY
We have decided to support Mrs Walker raising money for the arthritis society. We will be dressing up on Friday 3rd April in stars and stripes. For this we ask you donate a £1. Mrs Walker will be running in the Great North run in September too.

The children did really well last week remembering to do their talking homework and we are hoping that it will improve their writing during the big write on a Friday. The homework this week will be:

To find a poem and then learn it off by heart to recite and perform in front of their class.

Normal Numeracy and spellings will be sent home. In Mrs Harding's Numeracy group the children will not need to do a task this week. They will be given a sheet with lots of concepts on to learn off by heart. Some of the topics will be tested before the end of term with the assessments.

TESTING AND ASSESSMENT WEEK

This week we will be doing lots of assessments and tests. We will be assessing the children's reading. writing and numeracy. Please make sure not to keep the children off unless absolutely necessary as sitting an exam by themselves can change the result dramatically.

Here are a selection of sites we have used to review the learning.

Monday 23rd March

Welcome to this week's blog spot.

HOMEWORK

It was sad to see the final week of the islands homework as the children have really enjoyed doing it. Homework will change for the next few weeks before we start the next project. The new homework this week will be talking. It has been proved that talking about a topic can really improve the children's writing too. Please make sure that you put a comment in their diaries so that they have proof that they have done it. On Monday the children should bring home a sheet with the talking homework on.

Talking homework sheet:
Your homework this week is a talking homework. Talking can really help with writing. You need to speak to an adult and then get a message in your diary to say that you have done this. The topics this week are:
How a DVD player works....... or
How a Wii works.........

The children will still get spellings to learn and Numeracy from their Math's teacher.

GOLDEN TIME

Golden time on Thursday will now centre around bringing in drawing equipment, board games or book/magazines to read. Please do not send toys as some are getting lost.

LITERACY

In Literacy this week we are continuing to learn about EXPLANATIONS. The children are quite familiar with the layout and organisation of an explanation text and so this week we will be looking at more examples and in particular how paragraphs can make a piece of information clear.

Alongside this the children will also be learning about compound words. This means that when words are made up of separate words. Below are some different games to try:

http://www.quia.com/mc/87086.html

http://www.quia.com/cc/87086.html

http://www.crickweb.co.uk/assets/resources/flash.php?&file=compound%20words

http://www.ngfl-cymru.org.uk/vtc/crazy_comp_words/eng/Introduction/default.htm - try working through the lesson.

NUMERACY

We are all still very busy working our way through our Tables Awards so here are some more games to keep you going:

http://www.coolmath-games.com/Timernator/Timernator-multiplication.html

http://www.amblesideprimary.com/ambleweb/mentalmaths/tabletrees.html

http://www.amblesideprimary.com/ambleweb/mentalmaths/testtest.html - even more - you'll all be experts if you work your way through this lot!

http://www.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk/maths/division.htm - now you've got your times tables sorted can you work out the divisions in these games?

In Mrs Harding's group this week we will be reviewing quite a few topics such as number equations, inverse operations, using brackets in numbers and reflective/rotational symmetry. The children have been enjoying their lap top time using Mathletics and Tutpup too.

To find out more and get a head start see below for sites:

Check out the SHAPE section on http://www.mathszone.co.uk/ too. Lots of games to play to practise your skills and understanding of co-ordinates and direction!

As well as this we will be continuing to practice our skills in answering written questions. We will be doing an assessment on Monday and then spending time going through problem areas.

Mrs Bethell’s Group this week are continuing with our measurement work and focusing on weight, at the start of the week. We are concentrating on reading scale and balancing objects.
Please remember to learn : 1,000g = 1 kilogram
500g = ½ kilogram
250g = ¼ kilogram
750g = ¾ kilogram
We will also be multiplying numbers by 10 and 100 and adding 2 numbers together using the column method of addition.

Friday, March 13, 2009

Welcome to this week's blog spot. The children came into school on Friday supporting Red Nose Day and looked great. They are doing brilliantly fundraising too for the Good Shepherd appeal that we have during Lent.

GO 4 GOLD

We are fundraising funds with a go 4 gold scheme. Any unwanted/old gold can help us raise funds for the new playground project. Please return your envelopes ASAP. No later than the 28th of March. It is important that you complete the information on the back of the envelope unless it might not be accepted into the scheme. Also put the child's class and their name as we will put all the envelopes into a draw and the lucky winner will win a large Easter egg.

LITERACY

The children really enjoyed the dictionary and note-taking work they did last week. We are continuing to build up our non-fiction writing skills this week and we will be concentrating on EXPLANATIONS. The children will be analysing different explanation texts and describing it's structure:

TITLE - usually in the form of a question.

INTRODUCTION - a simple sentence or two that tells you what the text will be about.

SUB-HEADING - mini titles to help people find particular information quickly.

BULLET POINTS - for just writing pure facts or pieces of information in a short and quick way.

LABELS - to show the important parts of a diagram or picture.

CAPTION- a short sentence to describe what a photograph, picture or diagram is about.

http://www.teachers.ash.org.au/jeather/writingfun/writingfun.html - a good site that introduces the idea of explanations, how to structure what you want to write as well as some great examples so you have a very clear idea.We will continue to develop our skills with writing sentences and will be looking at punctuation too. Check out this lesson based link about sentences - just work through the starter activity then the main and then the plenary.

http://www.ngfl-cymru.org.uk/vtc/sentence_detectives/eng/Introduction/default.htm

If you fancy challenging yourself have a look at the link below - it's for older children but I know how many of you like to push yourself!http://www.channel4.com/learning/microsites/F/fairground/

NUMERACY

Monday 9th March

Welcome to this week's blog. Thank you to all the people who came to the Kingswood meeting last week.

HOMEWORK

Normal homework this week with numeracy and spellings.

Island Homework

Week – 6
The noise and the smell of the party encourage some unwanted visitors.
Write a description of the party explaining the events and the results. Use plenty of detail to give a vivid description.

PE KITS
Please can we remind you that the children need to wear a white tee shirt, blue shorts and pumps for PE. A few children do not have the correct PE kit and are wearing their outside kit when in the hall. Thank you.

LITERACY

The children worked very hard last week to understand how to write instructions so this week we are going to be continuing with a Non-Fiction theme. Through the course of the week the children will be investigating how to make best use of DICTIONARIES, how to explain words and write DEFINITIONS, and how to NOTE-TAKE.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/ks2bitesize/english/activities/dictionaries.shtml

http://www.crickweb.co.uk/assets/resources/flash.php?&file=wordorder1a - alphabetical order

http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/digger/9_11entry/1.shtml - I know it says 9-11 but I'm sure you can do it!!!

http://www.buzzin.net/revision_tips/skills/nt-00.htm - important information on how to make notes.

Alongside this the children will be continuing with Comprehension and Spell Well activities.

NUMERACY

Last week the children had lots of opportunities to go on the World Math's Day site. They also had a very enjoyable time all morning last Wednesday doing Numeracy all morning. We had seven activities in the classroom and then the children rotated round the class so they did them all. Ask your child to find out more.

In Mrs Harding's group this week we will be carrying on with our topic on angles. We will be looking again at angles on a straight line, in a right angle and round a point. The children will also be using protractors too to measure and draw angles.

Miss Robinson's Group are going to be working hard on developing their MULTIPLICATION and DIVISION skills this week. As well as this we will be working hard on developing our skills in MENTAL MATHS and UNDERSTANDING QUESTIONS. We have a very busy week ahead of us so let's get onto the links so you can all get practising:

http://www.wmnet.org.uk/wmnet/custom/files_uploaded/uploaded_resources/851/Hitthebuttonv7.swf - you can practice division on here too.

In Mrs Bethell’s Numeracy Group this week we are making sure we know our 3 and 4 times tables – these have all been stuck in homework books to learn at home – and we are still being tested on our knowledge of time facts – eg. How many days in a year?

The main part of the lesson is a focus on : reflective symmetry, work on angles, and direction and compass points. If you have a compass at home please could you allow your child it into school. Thankyou.
