Year 3/4 Weekly Update

Wednesday, October 22, 2008

Monday 3rd November

Welcome to a new half term and we can't wait to get going. We all hope that you have had a good rest and are looking forward to coming back to school. This is a really busy term for everyone but one of the best because of Christmas approaching.

Thank you to everyone who attended one of the three parents' evening in the last week. Spreading the times over three afternoons appeared to work well and there was more time to talk and less queuing too!!

AIR RAID SHELTERS TRIP

The Year Four had a fantastic day out to the air raid shelters on the last day and they were a credit to yourselves and the school.

On Monday 3rd of November it is Year Three who are going.

The children need a war time packed lunch.

They can wear their own clothes.

They may bring some money if we have time for the shop. The Year Four did not have any time so don't be surprised if they come back home with their money!

We will be leaving Stock port at 2.30pm and will be back by 3.30pm we hope.
To find out more about the air raid shelters see:

http://www.airraidshelters.org.uk/

Thank you to everyone who helped us with the trip and who will be helping on Monday.

LITERACY

Due to the last week of last half term being so busy we did not quite get our POETRY work completed. The children will have the opportunity to improve their Autumn Poems and present them as SHAPE poems too. As well as this we will be exploring CALLIGRAMS - where a word is made to look like it sounds e.g. S_L_I_D_E etc. Check out some of the links below:

http://www.poetryarchive.org/childrensarchive/home.do

http://www.childrenspoetrybookshelf.co.uk/default.asp

http://www.poetrysoc.com/

http://www.rhymezone.com/ - a useful rhyming dictionary

We will also be finding time to fit in our comprehension, our weekly SPELLWELL (the children are very excited to try out the boards they made during our WW2 Thinking Hats afternoon), and of course our BIG WRITE!

NUMERACY

It is really important that we get ahead with knowing our times table facts so use the games below to check how well you know them.

We are also going to be starting building up our Mental Maths skills so have a look through the games and activities on:

http://www.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk/maths/wordproblems/index.html

Looks like this week our time-keeping should be wonderful as we are all going to be working on time. We have mentioned specific sites for each group but feel free to try any - they all fit the topic!

In Mrs Harding's group we will be starting to work on telling the time and the digital clock as well as the twenty four hour clock. We will also be finishing off our work on Tally charts.

By the of end of a short week the children:

COULD be able to make and read tally charts to display information.

COULD be able to read time to the nearest minute.

COULD be able to calculate time in the 24 hour clock.

SHOULD be able to recognise time in 15 minute intervals.

MUST know what am and pm means.

MUST know important facts about time such as 24 hours in a day, 365 days in a year.

Mrs Bethell's Numeracy Group are also focusing on TIME this week too. This week we will be learning to tell the time in 5 minute intervals and solve simple time problems. I hope you have all remembered to use the clock you took home to practice telling the time. It takes a long time to learn to tell the time!!!!

Should be able to tell the time in 5 minute intervals
C
ould solve simple time problems.

SCIENCE

We will be finishing our topic on circuits and conductors and will be completing an assessment sheet. The children will be telling us how much they have learnt about electricity. Our new topic for this term is

KEEPING WARM

This week we will be learning about temperature and the need for a thermometer.

We will be thinking about the sense of touch not always being the best thing to measure how hot something is. The children will be learning about thermometers and how their readings change depending on the temperature of things.

By the end of the week the children

COULD be able to read a thermometer and predict temperatures of bowls of water.

SHOULD understand the need for a standard measure for measuring temperature.

MUST be able to explain how we measure temperature.

HISTORY

We will be doing lots of follow up work with the children about their trip to the Air Raid Shelters. Each team will produce a poster with writing and pictures about their day. We hope these posters will teach other children about World War Two.

Monday 20th October

Welcome to this week's blog spot.

Gosh the end of a very busy term this week. All the children are settled into their classes and their new routines especially the Year 3 who have joined us in the Juniors.

We have an extremely busy week in store with three parent's evenings.

The days are:

Monday and Tuesday from 3.30pm until 5.00pm.

Thursday from 1.30pm until 5.00pm.

You should have received a time/appointment for your child by the end of last week. If you did not manage to send a slip back then the teachers have allocated a spare time for you.

Please remember that on Friday all the Year 4 are out on the Air raid shelters trip. They are allowed to wear their own clothes and will need a packed lunch. Please remember that we may be late and might get back at around 3.30pm traffic permitting. I am sure that we will have a great time.

DON'T FORGET YEAR THREE PARENTS THE CHILDREN ARE OUT ON THE TRIP THE FIRST DAY BACK. SPREAD THE WORD!

We will not be sending out homework this week with the parent's interviews and being out on the trip. This provides an extra bit of time for reading with your child, learning timetables and high frequency words which are being tested before the half term.

LITERACY

This week in Literacy we will be learning about poetry. We will be having a look at all different poems and will be having a go at writing some poems ourselves.

To get a head start on poetry please look at:

http://www.strettonhandley.derbyshire.sch.uk/poems/concrete.htm

http://www.lancsngfl.ac.uk/curriculum/literacy/lit_site/html/fiction/my_monster/index.htm

Here are a few sites for spelling. Every week the children really enjoy playing a game called spellwell. We are going to be using some of the new boards to play that the children have made themselves last week.

By the end of the week the children:

COULD be able to interpret, use and make tally charts.

COULD be able to find the area and perimeter of shapes and work out dimensions from given areas and perimeters.

SHOULD be able to find the perimeter and the area.

MUST be able to calculate finding the perimeter by adding up the sides.

This week Miss Robinson's group will be finishing off their topic on 2D SHAPE. We will be exploring triangles, angles and reflective symmetry.

By the end of the week the children

must be able to identify lines of symmetry in shapes and complete symmetrical shapes and patterns.

should be able to recognise and name the different types of triangles - right-angled, equilateral, isoceles and scalene.

MUSIC

The children are really enjoying learning the war songs in class and some of their favourites are Run rabbit run.....White cliffs of Dover..... etc. Listen out for them humming the popular old favourites.

That's all about all for this term. We hope you have a great week off and we will see you all back at school bright eyed and bushy tailed on Monday 3rd November.

Monday 13th October

Welcome to this week's blog. We have a busy week in school this week and so we'll crack straight on.

The percentages for this week for children who have a comment in their diary and have read are:
In Mrs Harding's class 88% of children have been heard read.
In Mrs Bethell's 54% have been heard read.
In Miss Robinson's 66% have been heard read.

We would really like to get those percentages up near 100% so whenever you hear your child read can you please remember to write a comment in their diary. Many thanks.

OPEN DAY

Please remember that we have an open day on Monday and feel free to have a browse in school between the hours of 9.30am and 2.30pm.

PARENT'S EVENINGS

You should have received a letter about parent's evenings in the last week. If not pop into school to find a copy.

WW2 TRIP

Thank you to everyone who has paid and sent the consent forms into school for the Air Raid shelters trip. There are only a few children who have not done this as the day is fast approaching!
